ITMS Installation and Upgrade

The latest release of Symantec Installation Manager (SIM) introduces the following new features:

Table: List of new features in the Symantec Installation Manager

SQL Server installation check.

During SIM installation, SIM checks whether SQL Server is installed on the computer. If SQL Server is not installed on the computer, SIM displays a message and provides the URL to download and install SQL Server Express edition.

You can install SQL Server on another computer than Notification Server (off-box installation), or on the Notification Server computer (on-box installation) before or after SIM installation

New install readiness checks for Windows Server 2012 R2 operating system.

  • Checks whether Windows Server 2012 R2 operating system is installed on the computer.

The install readiness check for Windows Server 2012 operating system includes the following checks:

    • Install Readiness Check for Windows Server 2012 R2 operating system.

    • IIS Install Readiness Check for Windows Server 2012 R2 operating system.

    • ASPNET_SP3.cs Install Readiness Check to support the Windows Server 2012 R2 operating system.

    • WCF_7.1 Install Readiness Check to enable WCF on Windows Server 2012 R2 operating system.

    • Install Readiness Check for Internet Explorer 11.

New install readiness checks for Windows Server 2012 R2 operating system.

To support Windows Server 2012 R2, Symantec Installation Manager executes the following operations:

  • Checks whether the host name of the computer that has Windows Server 2012 R2 operating system contains underscore character ("_"). If the underscore character is detected, then SIM restricts the installation of Symantec Management Platform on the computer.

This restriction is because as per Internet Explorer security, Internet Explorer blocks cookies from a server whose host name contains underscore character. For more information, see the following Microsoft Support article:

  • Checks whether Internet Explorer version 11 is installed on the computer.

  • Displays a warning that Java Runtime 7 x86 is required for installation to continue.

New installation readiness checks for upgrade to 7.5 SP1.

To support upgrade to 7.5 SP1, Symantec Installation Manager checks for the following:

  • Supported upgrade path

The supported upgrade paths are ITMS 7.1 SP2 MP1.1 (includes the SMP build version 7.1.8401) and ITMS 7.5 HF6 (includes the SMP build version 7.5.1676). Install Readiness Check blocks the upgrade process if non-supported upgrade path is selected to upgrade to 7.5 SP1.

  • Supported database version

If you select 7.1 SP2 MP1.1 or 7.5 HF6 database in the Use existing database option in the Database Configuration page of SIM installation wizard, then SIM continues with the upgrade progress. SIM restricts usage of all other database versions, and blocks the upgrade process.

  • Partial upgrade

If upgrades are available for the currently-installed products, then you must upgrade all the currently-installed products that are compatible with the latest SMP version. Upgrade of only a few products is not allowed.

  • Selection of all latest hot fixes for installation

You can now install all latest available hot fixes of all the Symantec products that can be installed using SIM. For example, ITMS and Mobile products.

To install all the latest hot fixes, click Select all latest hot fix versions check box on the Install Hot Fixes page of SIM.

Availability of SIM Getting Started Guide.

After SIM installation is completed, you can now access the SIM Getting Started Guide from all pages of SIM application. Following is the URL of the Symantec Installation Manager Getting Started Guide:

Ability to import wildcard SSL certificates.

You can now import wildcard SSL certificates during Notification Server installation. A wildcard certificate is a public key certificate that can be used to secure a domain and its multiple sub domains.

After a wildcard SSL certificate is imported, SIM validates the domain name.

Ability to launch SIM or upgrade to the latest available version of SIM without restarting the computer.

As soon as Symantec Installation Manager launches, it checks whether there are any pending restarts. If SIM detects any pending restarts, a message is displayed which indicates that you must restart your computer for the system updates to be completed. You can now launch SIM or upgrade to the latest-available version of SIM without restarting the computer. However, you must restart the computer if any pending restarts are detected during installation of SMP or ITMS solutions, and before upgrade to 7.5 SP1.

Symantec Installation Manager performs this check when you execute installation or upgrade tasks of SMP, ITMS solutions, and SIM.

Automatic backup of registry keys before installation or upgrade.

SIM automatically creates a registry backup in the support folder before starting the installation, upgrade, or hot fix installation of Symantec Management Platform or IT Management Suite solutions . By default, the registry backup is available at the following location:

C:\Program Files\Altiris\Symantec Installation Manager\Support

If you encounter errors because of missing registry entries or corrupted registry file, then execute any of the following workarounds:

  • Restore the previous registry entries and then execute the installation process or upgrade process. To restore the previous registry entries, navigate to the registry backup and then double-click the latest AIMRoot.reg file.

  • Create new registry keys

Ability to create new registry keys to troubleshoot upgrade issues.

You can create new registry keys for existing database validation for upgrade to 7.5 SP1, for partial upgrade validation on Install New Products page, and for pending restart check.
